MFSA At General Conference

Methodist Federation for Social Action (MFSA) believes in the connection of the United Methodist Church and is committed to working toward a more justice-filled, inclusive, and equitable denomination at the upcoming General Conference. We are working in coalition across our denomination to move our legislative priorities forward.

MFSA Legislative Priorities the 3 Rs:

  1. Regionalization

  2. Removal of the Disciminatory language

  3. Revised Social Principles

This upcoming General Conference is a regular session and will also work through over 1,000 petitions and resolutions. All of which will make an impact on our church and consist of multiple topics and intersectional issues that we all care about deeply.

MFSA has created Plumblines in coalition with our partners as a resource for General Conference. Plumblines are legislative position papers that focus on multiple issues/legislative priorities that are important to us, share values, an analysis of the legislation, resources for further study, and recommended action. We offer this as a gift to the church and hope it serves as a resource as delegates prepare for GC, are in conversation with their delegations, and as a quick guide on site at GC. We will continue to release more Plumblines as they are completed. Please share them widely across the United Methodist Church and with your General Conference delegates.

During General Conference, MFSA will be communicating with you each day by email to keep you informed and will also be offering a play by play chat group of what is happening on the plenary floor in real time. More information on how to sign up for that chat group will be shared in the coming days.

MFSA is a member of the Love Your Neighbor Coalition (LYNC) and also its fiscal sponsor. LYNC is a partnership between 15 organizations that work toward a "just, inclusive, and grace-filled" United Methodist Church. We have worked together over many General Conferences and before that going back decades under other names. We know we can achieve much more together than on our own and our work towards this upcoming General Conference is no exception.

Work we are coordinating together with LYNC:

  1. Tracking legislation and organizing

  2. Securing space for gatherings, meetings, and provide office space for our collective work

  3. Providing the only independent translation service outside of GC to allow for delegates to be in conversation with each other outside official GC meeting

  4. Organizing opportunities to witness to our church about the issues that are important to us

  5. Managing volunteers on site (including training, assignments, and communication)

  6. Coordinating daily volunteer gatherings and opportunity for community building and fellowship

  7. Providing chaplains on site

  8. Coordinating an international craft market with our partners from central conferences

  9. Providing educational opportunities, providing hospitality to volunteers and delegates, and hosting events during GC

We all have a lot at stake and are working towards a more inclusive, intersectional, and justice filled United Methodist Church. We need your help to ensure that all we are planning can in fact happen. We need to raise $10,000 which will fund our MFSA work at GC and contribute to our coalition work with LYNC. Please make a gift today and support our work at General Conference

You make our collective work possible by your witness for justice every day in your church, community, and Annual Conference. MFSA does not receive any financial support from the United Methodist Church's giving channels. 100% of our budget is funded through your membership and your generosity in giving.
