NFAAUM Statement on Immigration Reform

The National Federation of Asian American United Methodists (NFAAUM) joins all religious communities, civil rights groups, community organizations and immigrant organizations in the United States in opposing current Congressional legislation that seeks to criminalize the undocumented persons among us.

Such attitudes fly in the face of the biblical mandates to treat the alien and strangers among us with fairness, justice and love (Leviticus19, Deuteronomy 24), and exploit the most vulnerable of God’s people among us.

NFAAUM supports legislation that will provide for:

1. workable border control,
2. a credible and fair pathway to legal immigration status,
3. an increase in immigration visa numbers which will reduce the waiting time of family reunification that for many result in periods of 18 years or longer.

We call on all United Methodists, especially elected officials, to adhere to the United Methodist Social Principles that provide for fair and humane treatment of immigrants in dealing with all issues having do with immigration and immigration policies.
