MFSA
Welcomes New Network of
Progressive UM Young Adults
MFSA
welcomes the emergence of a new network of young adults committed to
expressing
their faith by addressing justice
issues in the church and in society.
This grassroots effort to link progressive young adults
in the United Methodist Church has grown into a new organization,
ON FIRE.
Young adults, including lay people, college students, and
seminarians gathered to discuss the structure, mission
and goals of the organization in New York City last August.
Participants who came from across the United States reflected
on their role in the church, and the church’s relationship to issues
that face today’s society. The organization specifically plans
to address economic and human rights, inclusivity, and church
theology.
Following the United Methodist General Conference, held
earlier this year, momentum began to build among progressive young
adults who
were struggling to find a forum for discussion and action
around issues facing the church and society.
ON FIRE developed out of a desire for an organized young
adult voice in the United Methodist Church that would not
be exclusively linked to a General Agency of the church.
While not making any formal affiliations with existing
groups, ON FIRE has expressed interest in working closely with MFSA.
Like MFSA,
ON FIRE plans to address a broad range of issues.
ON FIRE is poised to become a connection for young United
Methodists who are seeking to become involved in productive
dialogue and concentrated actions that reflect the tradition of the
founder of
United Methodism, John Wesley.
